The approach to the Generalife garden has this show stopping Islamic garden. Note the simple fountain that feeds into four rectangular pools of water. Granada, Spain, 1350's CE.
The Islamic garden creates a view of paradise. Befitting a paradise: plantings include flowers and fruit trees and lots of water - all set within an orderly and balanced frame. Islamic gardens were influenced by Persian and Roman gardens and are similarly enclosed and use geometric planting areas and water features. Ornamentation is very simple because the Koran prohibits recreating the likeness of humans - no Greek-style statues here. The result is elegant, and modern.
