A bench is a classic way to signal a destination.  Imagine this scene without the bench - just another woodland border.  The bench invites us to pause and take in the view. Versailles, France.

Good gardens provide moments that cause us to pause and reflect.  I call these moments "destinations" because the feel like we have arrived at an intentional place.  These can be places to stop and rest like a bench; or can be a specimen plant, piece of sculpture or a fountain.  Sometimes it is just a clearing.
